Not What, Who

InuYasha stood near the edge of the rise, staring out over the village below.  There was a breeze that caught his hair, and played with the ends.  One hand rested lightly on his sword hilt.  He seemed somber, troubled.

"What is it?" Kagome said, walking up next to her husband.  She rested her hand lightly on his arm.

“You know, you’ve been here two months now,” he said.

“I know.  Two good months, too,” she replied.  “But what’s bothering you?”

He could see the glint of water beyond that marked the river.  A small group of children were walking back towards the village from the stream, carrying a fish that they had caught.

"I was thinking about the village and your city.  What happened to the river?"

Kagome  looked thoughtful for a moment. "I think they covered it up.  It's still there, but it runs in pipes, underground, so it can't flood anything."

He shook his head and sighed.  "It's so different."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.  Then he turned to look at her.  "Do you miss it?"

She leaned her head against his arm. "Sometimes.  Some things," she replied.  "I lived there so long."

"Are...are you happy here?" he asked. "Really?"

She looked up at him.  The sunlight touched his hair, making its silver shine, but his ears were laid back in distress, and  his eyes hid in the shadows of his bangs. "What sort of question is that?" she said.

"I was thinking about your mother's house, and then our house and this village..."  His voice drifted off.  "You had so much.  I've taken you away from so much."

Her warm arms circled around him and she rested her face on his chest.  "Baka Inuyasha," she said.  "You are thinking about the place where I wasn't happy.  It's not about how much we have, but who we are with, you know."

He pulled back, cupped her cheek with that hand.  His amber eyes searched hers, looking for something, some confirmation.

"I can't be happy where there's no InuYasha, husband," she said, giving him a brilliant smile, then reaching up to give his a short, gentle kiss.  "Come home and I'll make you some noodles."

"With chicken?" he asked hopefully.

"With chicken.  It's already cooking," she replied.

She took him by the hand, and he let her pull him towards the house.
