Chapter 1 by Dangersque

‘Christmas,’ I sneered mentally. ‘What a crock of shit.’

It had all started last week, when that stupid wench Kagome had started going on about some celebration that was going to happen in her time, and she just had to get home on time, jewel shards be damned. She explained this “Christmas” to us as a time of peace and goodwill to all. Right before sitting me after I pointed out how dumb it was to cut down a tree just to put it in your house for a couple of days.

The final moments of our argument before she left for home still rang through my head.

“Who gives a shit about this anyway?” I snarled.

“Of course you wouldn’t understand Christmas! It’s a time you’re supposed to spend time with your family and loved ones!” Kagome sneered back. “That’s why I have to leave!”

All of the fight had left me after that. Her message was clear, she wanted to spend time with her loved ones, and I wasn’t on that list. I wasn’t even worthy of celebrating the damn day, I had no family or loved ones to speak of. And that bitch decided to rub that in my face. I could imagine Sesshoumaru laughing before he killed me if I went up to him and asked him to take part in such a foolish day.

Miroku and the others decided that they wanted to celebrate the holiday too, and they enthusiastically spread the word. I didn’t want to be around them, I was too miserable to be around happy people. So I went to the innkeeper. He owed me a few favors and gave me his best jug of sake. There was only one place for me to go. Christmas is for family and loved ones, so I decided to spend the day with my mother. I sat under her tree and watched the snow blow in drifts, occasionally taking a swig of my sake.

I smelled her before I heard her, and I heard her before I saw her. “How’d you find me?” I asked.

“Myoga showed us this place once…” Kagome replied. “You picked a nice spot to bury her… I’m sorry about earlier. I said that all wrong.”

“What do you want Kagome?” I stood, getting a bit irritated. This was supposed to be my special spot, where I could mourn.

Kagome gave me a long suffering look, “Christmas is a time when-“ I didn’t give her the chance to finish. I was still too bitter.

“People spend time with their family and the people they love. You told me this already, I get it, go home. I won’t stop you. It’s not like I’m a person anyway.”

“You don’t get it,” Kagome shouted at me, making my ears sink back into my hair, “I want you to come celebrate Christmas with me!”

I gave her my best withering glare, “I’m not some stray that needs pity, wench.”

“Oh you…” Kagome took some deep breaths. “It’s not pity! It won’t be Christmas without you! Come on, Inuyasha. It’s all snowy, and my pants are soaked. Don’t make me beg!” Kagome pleaded

I considered her for a second, a warm feeling going through me despite the cold. “Keh, go to Kirara, I’ll be there in a second.” I watched Kagome give me a dazzling smile before she bounced back to Kirara.

I took another swig of my sake, thinking maybe this Christmas thing wasn’t so bad after all. I poured the rest of the jug on the ground and whispered, “Merry Christmas, Ma…”
