Meeting in the Dark

He spies her from where he keeps watch, snug in the dark branches.  She walks hesitantly, as if she suspects she’s being followed.  She moves a few steps forward, then stops, turning her head around to listen, then a quick glance around.  She does this again and again while he watches.  He can smell her uncertainty and nervousness.  As she nears, he licks his lips with anticipation, poised, ready.

Dropping as silently as a leaf spiralling down through the tree's branches  he lands, standing before her.  She almost bumps into him, but something - a breath, or the rustle of his clothes, perhaps, or even his scent - stops her forward motion. His red looking black in the night, she barely notices until she catches the a flash of silver that is his hair, touched faintly by the moonlight.  A touch of youki tingles at the edge of her senses, setting the hairs at the back of her neck on edge, a hint of threat in the familiarity of it.  It feels like his aura is reddened, hot enough to let her know he is not teasing.

She stands perfectly still.  A single claw reaches out, gently lifts her chin,
exposing her long white throat, forcing her eyes up  to be swallowed in his gaze.  His pupils are huge in the darkness, circles of blackness that almost glow.  The smallest hint of a smirk hovers behind the steely look of his eyes, and she feels as trapped as a deer caught in headlights.

"You're late," he says, quietly.   She can feel his breath on her cheek.

"I know," she said, her heart pounding.  He could smell her anxiety, hear the racing of her blood. “I’m sorry, InuYasha.”

“Keh,” he replies, then looks at her sternly.  "Did you bring it?"

"Of course," she says. “But I think they suspect something.  It took them forever to go to sleep. I was really worried someone had followed me this time.”

He turns around, gets down on one knee.  “Come on, Kagome.  We don’t have all night.”

They race through the night to the place he has ready for them. A small fire burns in the old hut.  He stirs it, adding more wood until the room brightens with  light.

Sitting back on his haunches, he looks up at her, flicks one ear in impatience.  “Well?” he says.

She looks at him with half a smile as she digs into her pouch.  Her blue gray eyes glitter in the firelight. “It would just be so much easier if you let me do this back at Kaede’s, you know.”

“And have Miroku think I’m a wuss?  I’d never hear the end of it.” He moves in front of her, and turns his back.  “Do your job, woman.”

“Ah, there it is!” she says, pulling out her hairbrush.  She grabs a length of InuYasha’s long, silvery mane, and carefully begins to pull the brush through.

“Nobody brushes hair like you do, woman, “ he says, visibly relaxing at last.  “Mind the ears!”
