1. Chapter 1 by kmoaton
She found it stuffed in the back of her sock drawer.
How it escaped her attention after all this time was a mystery. A scrap of red amid a sea of white should have been so obvious but, somehow, it had never caught her eye. She couldn’t even remember how it had come into her possession but just holding it in her hand bought back a flood of memories of times past and she felt the sting of tears in her eyes. It had been three long years and now on her graduation day, when her future loomed in front of her, the red scrap of fabric reminded her of what she didn’t have and what she truly wanted. College no longer mattered; all that mattered was finding a way, somehow, back to him.
Maybe the piece of haori was a sign; maybe the kamis were giving her an indication of her future. Deep inside, Kagome wondered if the choice to return to the past had always been hers but fear then obligation kept her out of the well house. Staring at the bit of red in her hand, Kagome abruptly understood. She knew there was no life for without Inuyasha by her side but if she didn’t find her courage to face her fears and leave her childhood behind, she would have to learn to accept that she chose to let him go. Hearing her mother call, Kagome stuffed the scrap of fabric in the pocket of her blazer. When graduation was over, it would be time to do what needed to be done. It would be time for her to figure out the way home.
