Early Spring Surprise

Kagome walked around the house to where the vegetable garden was.  Although she knew that there was no way she could start her garden yet, with her child so close to term, her fingers itched to be digging in the cool spring ground.  She had taken to walking by the garden site, plucking at a stray weed or two, and sitting down, trying to plan what she would do once her child was born.

She thought she had been doing this unnoticed.  She was rather surprised this time when as she neared  the corner of the house, she heard voices.

“Now what?” InuYasha said.

“I think we should add in some of the compost,” Rin’s voice answered him.

The talk stopped Kagome cold in her tracks.  Peeking around the corner, she saw her husband, his sleeves tied back, standing at one corner of the garden bed, leaning on a shovel.  The dirt had been spaded and the weeds and left over remnants from the last growing season pulled out and heaped into a pile on the side - all the things that Kagome wished she could have been doing, but wasn’t really able to get started on.  Rin, wearing work clothes instead of one of her pretty kimonos, held a basket that seemed heavy.  InuYasha nodded, and she poured the basket contents on the ground in front of him.

“You sure this is how to do it?  I don’t want Kagome to come back and tell me I messed up real bad,” InuYasha said, staring at the dark compost.

“This is what Rin did for Kaede-sama’s garden,” the girl said, smiling.  “Now you turn it into the rest of the dirt, and mix it up.”

“Go get the next load.  I’ll start here,” he said, digging the shovel in.  “I wonder what Kagome will say when she sees what we’ve done?”

“Oh, Rin is sure Kagome-sama will be very happy.  I’ve heard her worry about getting the garden in when she’s talked to Kaede-sama.”  She rubbed her nose, smearing a small streak of dirt across it.

InuYasha looked at her and smiled.  “Yeah.  I kept catching her walking out back here and looking, and I know she’s been thinking about the garden, but with the baby and all, there’s no way she could start it yet.” He tossed a spadeful of dirt.  “I don’t know even if she realized I knew she was doing it.  But I knew it was important to her.  Thanks for helping.  I really don’t know much about this gardening stuff.”

Kagome pressed her body back against the wall of her house where she couldn’t be seen by the others.  Not knowing whether to sigh, smile or cry, she rested her hands over her swollen stomach.  “Your daddy surprised me this time for sure, little one,” she whispered.

Turning, but feeling cherished, she walked back silently into the house, where she would make some tea and sew until they finished, walking into the house, dusty and tired and happy, to spring their surprise.
